楊振寧的 11 頁博士論文:當精煉勝過厚重

在科學史上,博士論文往往是研究者踏入學術殿堂的重要門檻。一般人印象中的論文動輒數百頁, 記錄詳盡的推導與資料。然而,諾貝爾獎得主 楊振寧 的博士論文卻只有 11 頁, 這背後還有一段與他指導教授 Edward Teller 的趣味故事。

Teller 的回憶

I had been hearing about Yang the experimentalist since he had left the theoretical physics department. Some of his colleagues considered his work a disaster. In fact, some wag produced the rhyme, "If there's a bang, it's Yang." So I was being tactful when I said to him, "I've heard that your experiments are not going too well. Why don't you come back and try writing up your proof for a thesis?"

Frank hesitated a little bit, and then said he would try. A few days later, he reappeared with three sheets of paper. They did indeed supply the proof of the relationship, but so short a doctoral dissertation made me nervous.

"That's very good," I said, "but why don't you add the proof for the relationship in the case of half-integer angular momentum values?" A few days later, Yang again showed up in my office. This time he was carrying an additional four sheets of paper. I was glad to see the increase and told him so. But, I explained, the custom in Chicago was that theses should be even longer than that. When he got to eleven pages a few weeks later, I said okay. He submitted them and was granted his doctorate.

從三頁到十一頁

原本嘗試做實驗的楊振寧,因為進展不順,被戲稱「哪裡有爆炸,哪裡就有楊」。 最後在 Teller 的建議下,他回到理論領域,將自己的數學推導寫成論文。

一開始,這篇博士論文僅有 3 頁!Teller 覺得太短,便鼓勵他逐步補充。先加上半整數角動量的情形,增加到 7 頁; 再補充更完整的內容,最終才達到 11 頁。這樣的篇幅,依然短得驚人,但已經足以通過審查,讓他順利獲得博士學位。

精煉與厚重的對比

這段故事提醒我們:論文的價值不在厚重,而在能否切中要害。 楊振寧的 11 頁,蘊含了清晰而完整的數學證明,這才是真正的學術貢獻所在。
